2026 NEW YEAR’S WISHES, UYI CELEBRATES ITS RECTOR IN UNITY
On Friday, February 6, 2026, the 700-seat Amphitheater of the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences was transformed into a true temple of gratitude. The academic community of the University of Yaounde I gathered there for the traditional New Year’s wishes ceremony in honor of its Rector, Prof. Remy Magloire Etoua, thus ushering in a year marked by cohesion and ambition.
A Moment of Emotion
The first highlight of the ceremony was devoted to merit.
The presentation of Medals of Honor for Labor and letters of commendation to staff admitted to retirement reminded everyone that the University of Yaoundé I is a family that never forgets its builders. This deeply emotional moment celebrated the intergenerational bonds that form the foundation of our institution.
The Commander
In a masterful retrospective, the Secretary General, Prof. Rosine Paki Matio, epse Sale, painted the portrait of a conquering university. Between academic excellence, sporting supremacy at CHAZU, and artistic influence at UNIFAC, UYI reaffirmed its leadership. She also praised the Rector’s stature, elevated to the prestigious rank of Commander of the National Order of Valor, a symbol of his dedication to the State.
Tribute to the Architect and the Unifier
One of the most solemn moments was the presentation of a special gift from the university community to the Head of UYI, consisting of two exceptional works of art.
The Ebony and Bronze Vase, powerfully upheld by six male and female arms, illustrates the unbreakable solidarity of the community around its Guide and Chief Architect.
The Bronze Drummer, a majestic figure standing on an ebony base, embodies the Unifier. It is a vibrant call to the Sacred Union, the sound that mobilizes energies for the greatness of the “Mother of Universities.”
The Rector’s Vision: “An Auditorium of Miracles”
Taking the floor with his trademark inspiration, the Rector set the course for 2026:
“Together, we must make the University of Yaoundé I an auditorium of miracles. An auditorium of miracles—not of magic, but of knowledge, innovation, and creativity. A place where every voice, every idea, every discovery resonates and helps build the future of our nation.”
In conclusion, he emphasized the demands of every moment by quoting John Dewey:
“The best guarantee for the future is to educate today.”
“It is in this spirit that we must live every lecture delivered, every meeting held, every book opened, every examination organized, every partnership concluded.”
The Move Toward Excellence
The ceremony ended with the traditional handshake procession, a parade of respect during which teachers, administrative staff, and students united with their Rector for a 2026 of total radiance.
