This is one of the oldest departments in the Faculty of Arts, letters and Social Sciences. The department received the first students in 1961 and the first ever Ph.D. awarded by the University of Yaounde was defended by Tala Kashim Ibrahim, then a student of this department and now Professor emeritus.Because of its age and centrality to the national objective of full bilingualism, this department is not far away from the administrative building.
